According to the head of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, the cost of gas may fall! Click for more details.

Alexandre Silveira, Minister of Mines and Energy, indicated the possibility of a significant reduction of up to 62% in the price of gas for industries. Currently, the ministry is focused on the “Gas for Employment” project, with the goal of boosting the production and distribution of this fuel.

In this sense, according to estimates from the Ministry itself, gas is currently being sold to the industry at prices ranging from US$13.34 to US$18.44 per MMBtu (Million BTUs).

However, Silveira is confident that it is possible to negotiate and increase supply in the market, resulting in a drop in prices. However, he emphasizes that for this to happen, it is necessary to change production.

Understand the Ministry of Mines and Energy's strategy to cut gas costs

Silveira explains his logic: at the moment, the extracted gas is automatically reinjected into the wells for oil production. If we reduce the percentage of gas used, it is possible to increase supply throughout the country.

In this scenario, the price could decrease from US$ 18 to approximately US$ 8/MMBtu. This represents a decrease of 40% to 62% in the gas price.

Petrobras announced cuts in May

A month ago, Petrobras announced a reduction of 21.3% in the price of cooking gas, subtracting approximately R$ 8.97 from the price of the cylinder – which may finally cost less than R$ 100.

This occurred because, according to the company, the cost of gas and fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, were based on the Import Price Parity (PPI). With the end of the PPI, competition with foreign countries ceases to exist.

As a result, domestic competition has intensified, making prices more attractive to the end consumer. Now, with this new maneuver by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the price of gas may be favored again.

Therefore, the expectation is that in the coming days we will have a clearer vision of what this offer will be like and what the proposal will be for the distribution of fuel throughout the country.
