In essence, the INSS offers the closed season insurance as an aid to artisanal fishermen, especially during the period when fishing becomes unviable to ensure the reproduction of species. During this period, the fisherman receives a monthly amount corresponding to the current minimum wage, currently set at R$1,320.

Starting October 1st, fishermen from states such as Mato Grosso, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte have already started receiving insurance, demonstrating their commitment to conserving fishing resources in these regions. What are the criteria for qualifying for INSS benefits?
To qualify for INSS's closed season insurance, fishermen must meet certain criteria:
- Be active and registered in the RGP (General Fishing Registry) of MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply) as a professional artisanal fisherman for at least one year;
- Being a special beneficiary of INSS as a professional artisanal fisherman;
- Prove the social security contribution relating to the commercialization of production in the last year before the request;
- Not receive any other benefit from INSS or BPC-LOAS, except accident assistance or survivor's pension;
- Having only fishing as the main means of subsistence.

For those who wish, the process of applying for the closed season insurance is straightforward:
- Go to the Meu INSS website, or the app (Android and iOS);
- Click on “New Order”;
- Search for “safe-defeso”;
- Follow the instructions shown on the display.
Along with the CPF, those who act on behalf of the fisherman by proxy must present the relevant documents, such as the proxy itself and a photo ID.
