What is the wrong PIX scam?

Typically, the PIX scam is executed in a planned manner, making it take the victim a while to realize that they have been truly deceived.

It all starts when the criminal contacts the victim, claiming to have made a payment via PIX. The scammer then sends a fake proof of transfer, simulating a deposit into the victim's account.

Later, the victim begins to question the alleged payment received and responds to the scammer to understand what it is about. The scammer then claims to have been confused and made the wrong transfer.

At this stage of the story, the criminal pretends to be desperate because he doesn't know the victim and because he transferred the wrong amount. He then asks the victim to reimburse the alleged PIX.

The victim, often without checking whether they actually received a transfer, may end up making the supposed refund to the scammer, sending the money that was paid in error.

However, after making the PIX transfer, the victim may realize that it was all a scam. The criminal had never made a transfer to the person's account and requested a payment for something that was never sent.

How to deal with this situation?

When a victim realizes that they have transferred money to a scammer, it is understandable that they feel extremely frustrated and, depending on the amount, even desperate. Unfortunately, the lost money cannot be recovered immediately, as there is still no mechanism to cancel a PIX transfer that has already been made.

There are legal measures that can be taken, such as contacting the bank where the victim has an account. It is important to report how the PIX scam occurred and make it clear that you were the victim of a scam, so that the financial institution can take appropriate measures.

In this case, the case will be evaluated and the person may receive a refund, in some cases, through the PIX Special Refund Mechanism. However, it is important to keep in mind that the process can take time and requires a detailed analysis of what happened by the Special Mechanism to obtain the effective refund.

If you have any questions, it is always important to talk to your financial institution. And remember: do not make transfers via PIX without being sure that everything is correct.
