Drivers should always be aware of possible offenses that may result in suspension of their National Driver's License (CNH). Yes, there are some very serious offenses that will automatically cause you to lose your license.
These infractions, by the way, are all listed in the CTB (Brazilian Traffic Code). Driving while intoxicated, refusing to take a breathalyzer test and driving while threatening pedestrians, for example, are offenses that can suspend your driver's license for up to 12 months, in some cases.
However, this is not the only way to lose your license. In fact, it is possible to lose your driver's license in the long term just by having so-called “points on your license”.

Points on your license: how they impact your driver's license
First of all, it is worth noting that in addition to the infractions that result in immediate suspension, there is another way to lose your driver's license: the points system. Basically, every time you commit a traffic violation, you receive points on your license that, when they reach a certain limit, suspend your license.

See below how this limit works, as determined by the CTB:
- For drivers without any very serious infractions in 12 months: 40 points;
- For a driver with a very serious infraction in 12 months: 30 points;
- For drivers with two or more very serious infractions in 12 months: 20 points.
This means that a person who has committed very serious infractions within a 12-month period has a much lower tolerance.
Violations: fines and points
See below how many points you receive on your driver's license for each infraction, as well as the amount of each fine:
- Minor infraction: 3 points and a fine of R$ 88.38;
- Average infraction: 4 points and a fine of R$ 130.16;
- Serious infraction: 5 points and a fine of R$ 195.23;
- • Very serious infraction: 7 points and a fine of R$ 293.47 (the multiplier factor may increase this amount).
