MEI scams: learn how to protect yourself

Becoming an MEI (Individual Microentrepreneur) has become an interesting option for those looking to formalize their business and set their own hours. However, MEIs must be careful about the scams they are subject to.

There are a variety of scams that target this type of work. Many of these scams involve requests for payment of fees and threats of CNPJ cancellation. Fraudulent contacts can come via email, SMS and even WhatsApp.

With data available for online consultation, MEIs end up becoming an easy target for online criminal operations. Therefore, knowing what your obligations are as an MEI helps you identify scam attempts.

MEI: how scams work

First of all, it is important to point out that the MEI has only one monthly obligation: the payment of DAS MEI (Simples Nacional Collection Document), which includes taxes:

  • municipal (ISS);
  • state (ICMS);
  • employer contribution to Social Security (INSS).

DAS MEI is basically a guide where you pay all of this at the same time, that is, all at once, every 20th. In addition to this monthly payment, there is also the Annual Declaration of the MEI Simples Nacional (DASN SIMEI).

These are approaches often used by scammers: fake DAS MEI and DASN SIMEI bills.

Use only official websites

When you receive bills or links via message, email or any other contact channel asking you to pay your MEI obligations, ignore them. You are the one who must access the Federal Government website to pay your obligations.

The address you should access for official information is Entrepreneur Portal. Use this platform only for payments and as a source of information.
