A new law has been implemented prohibiting the transportation of fish from the state of Mato Grosso, valid for five years. The decision aims to protect the region's natural resources and aquatic biodiversity.

This ban directly affects local fishermen, compromising their income and livelihood. They depend on catching and selling fish as their main source of sustenance.
In response, former congressman Sergio Ricardo proposes creating a special fund to assist fishermen. The proposed assistance may range from R$ 1,320 to R$ 4,000, depending on the project's approval.
Details about assistance for fishermen
Ricardo advocates creating a Fisherman's Fund to support those affected by the ban on transporting fish. The project provides for financial assistance for three years.
In the first year, the amount of one minimum wage would be paid, equivalent to R$ 1,320 in 2024. In the second year, the allowance would be reduced to R$ 660. In the third year, the amount would decrease even further, reaching only R$ 33.
Members of the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso (ALMT) are seeking ways to increase the allowance amount. Sergio Ricardo, as a counselor of the State Audit Court (TCE), also supports this initiative.
He emphasizes the importance of providing a more adequate amount to ensure the subsistence of fishers and their families. An amount between R$ 3,000 and R$ 4,000 would be more significant and useful for fishers.
Details of the ban on fish transportation
The “Zero Transport” project will come into effect on January 1, 2024, prohibiting the transportation, storage, and sale of fish for the next five years.
During this period, catch-and-release fishing and subsistence fishing will be permitted. The objective is to preserve fishery resources and ensure the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.
