Ukrainian law allows Brazilian families to obtain million-dollar compensation, and the reason is remarkable. Families of Brazilian combatants who lost their lives in the conflict have the right to claim compensation of US$ 400 thousand, equivalent to approximately R$ 2 million.

Families of Brazilian military personnel who met their death in Ukraine have the chance to claim million-dollar compensation.
At the beginning of the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine formalized a document recognizing the right to compensation for the families of soldiers who were victims of the war.
Thus, according to the decision of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, issued in January 2023, the considerable compensation must be processed in installments. Initially, the families of deceased soldiers are to receive R$ 400,000, and the remaining R$ 1.6 million will be divided into 40 installments. Here is part of what the decision states:
Families of Russian or Belarusian citizens [an ally of Russia], or of those who permanently reside in these countries, are excluded from the compensation. Families convicted of treason or of supporting the aggressor state will also not have access to the benefit.

Brazilians who met their deaths in Ukraine
Estimates from Western experts suggest that more than 350,000 combatants, both Ukrainian and from allied nations, have died since the conflict began. Among these casualties were 4 Brazilian military personnel, who volunteered for the Ukrainian forces.

The first Brazilian to die was André Hack Bahi, a 43-year-old from Rio Grande do Sul and a war veteran. He met his death in June 2022, in a clash in Sievierodonetsk. However, his family only received his remains in December, six months later.
Thalita do Valle, aged 39, and Douglas Búrigo, aged 40, died on July 1, 2022, in an attack in Kharkiv. The last Brazilian to die was Antônio Hashitani, a 25-year-old from Paraná. He met his death in a shelter attacked by Russian forces on August 2, as confirmed by Itamaraty.
