There may be reasons for workers in a certain state to celebrate. This is justified by the ongoing analysis in the Legislative Assembly of a bill proposing a 9% increase in the minimum wage.

In this context, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), governor of Rio Grande do Sul, sent a bill last week that allows for this increase in the state's basic wage, or regional minimum wage.
Thus, if the Assembly ratifies the bill, professionals in the state will experience an increase in the minimum wage. In addition, the law also determines a change in the adjustment date for the regional minimum wage, that is, when the State updates the amount, which would be changed from February to May, with an adjustment.
Change in the minimum wage
According to the bill submitted by Leite, the document establishes a 9% increase in the minimum wage for workers in Rio Grande do Sul. Thus, this amount would rise from R$1443,94 to R$1573,89. Therefore, the first wage bracket would receive an increase of R$129,95.
It is important to point out that the legislative proposal indicates an increase higher than the accumulated inflation over the last 12 months, taking into account the period through January 2023. For comparison, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) during this period was 5,71%.
In fact, the state government used the following argument for the minimum wage increase: “the adjustment now proposed partially offsets the regional minimum wage against the effects of inflation and maintains the State’s competitiveness compared with other federative entities with socioeconomic characteristics similar to Rio Grande do Sul”.
Details of the regional minimum wage
Unlike what happens in other regions of Brazil, the minimum wage in Rio Grande do Sul is divided into five brackets, which influence the remuneration of professionals in the State and of categories whose adjustment is not determined by collective conventions or agreements.
Lastly, it is important to emphasize that the government announced the change to the minimum wage at the end of May. However, workers' representatives are seeking an increase of more than 15%, while business owners advocate eliminating the regional minimum wage.
