Currently, people registered with CadÚnico can access various social benefits. For example, some families benefit from Bolsa Família, while others receive the Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC).
Both benefits are intended for specific groups so far and have their own rules. However, many question whether it is possible to receive Bolsa Família and BPC at the same time.
How do these benefits work?
To clarify this question, we must understand how each of these programs works. First, Bolsa Família provides beneficiaries with an average of R$ 600, with variable additions of R$ 50 to R$ 150 made throughout this year. Currently, the program serves approximately 20.9 million families that meet the eligibility criteria.
On the other hand, BPC is an INSS assistance benefit equivalent to the minimum wage, with annual adjustments. The Early Childhood Benefit (BPI) is intended for families with children up to six years old, granting R$ 50 per member in this age group.
Under the current rules, people with disabilities or those over 65 years of age living in poverty may apply for the BPC. In addition, it is worth noting that the BPC does not provide a thirteenth payment, unlike pensions and retirement benefits, nor does it offer a survivor’s pension.

So, is it possible to receive Bolsa Família and the BPC simultaneously? After understanding how both benefits work, let’s discuss this issue. Each person can submit an application through the Cadastro Único, depending on the family’s income. This is where things can become more complex.
For a long time, even though Bolsa Família and the BPC were not considered income but rather social assistance benefits, the same family could not receive both at the same time. In other words, a family receiving one of the programs would have to choose between continuing to receive that benefit or giving it up in order to receive the other.
However, there was a change to Bolsa Família this year, following the publication of a new Provisional Measure (MP). The following criteria are now considered to make it possible to receive both payments:
- Families with members who have disabilities may receive both benefits;
- Starting in January of next year, there will be a reduction in the percentage brackets of the BPC received by people with disabilities in relation to the monthly income required to receive Bolsa Família. However, the degree of the disability must be assessed before granting the new benefit.

The Ministry of Social Development (MDS) recently announced a new way to calculate the benefit amount. Previously, it was R$ 600 for all beneficiaries. Now, this amount is the minimum, which means it will be possible to receive more. The MDS began considering the number of people in each family to determine the benefit.
Families with up to four members will receive the minimum amount of R$ 600. However, families with five or more members may receive R$ 142 per person. Therefore, families with 10 members, for example, may receive R$ 1420.
In addition, the Federal Government introduced four additions to Bolsa Família. The Early Childhood Benefit (BPI) is intended for families with children up to six years old, granting R$ 50 per member in this age group. Next, there is the Family Variable Benefit (BVF), divided into three categories, paying R$ 50 to the following groups: children between 7 and 18 years old, pregnant women, and breastfeeding women – women who are breastfeeding.
It is important to note that, with these changes, the average benefit is now R$ 700. To be eligible for the income transfer, citizens must be registered with CadÚnico and have a per capita family income of up to R$ 218. If a person has a job and exceeds this limit, they may still continue receiving the benefit.
