The end of the year is approaching, and Bolsa Família participants’ anxiety about the benefit’s 13th salary is increasing.

Extra Bolsa Família benefit in December
Normally, the 13th salary is processed between November and December. In 2023, Bolsa Família beneficiaries will receive an additional payment. However, this does not correspond to the 13th salary.
According to Minister Wellington Dias, head of the Ministry of Social Development (MDS), Bolsa Família operates as a social program, not as employment or social security. For this reason, it does not follow CLT guidelines and does not have a 13th salary planned.
However, other additional benefits linked to the program may provide financial support for families in December.
Bolsa Família amount for December 2023
As in previous periods, Bolsa Família, at the end of 2023, will determine the amount per individual and per family unit. Thus, each member will receive at least R$ 142. Additionally, each family will be guaranteed at least R$ 600.
There will also be bonuses linked to the program, benefiting pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and members aged 7 to 18 with an extra R$ 50. The same rule applies to children up to 6 years old, with an additional R$ 150.
It is important to highlight a new increase scheduled for December: Auxílio Gás, a government initiative to help with the cost of cooking gas.
Currently, around 5 million families receive this benefit, which aligns with the Bolsa Família schedule. Auxílio Gás is provided every two months and follows the same schedule as Bolsa Família.
Thus, those enrolled in both programs will receive an additional financial boost in December, easing end-of-year expenses.
The exact amount has not yet been made public, as it is based on the average gas price over the last six months. However, its announcement is expected at the beginning of December.
How to apply for Bolsa Família?
Those who wish to join Bolsa Família and receive the payments and bonuses can register. Follow the steps:

- First, the head of the family must go to the nearest CRAS (Social Assistance and Reference Center) with the documents of all family members;
- Next, they will provide information and complete a socioeconomic questionnaire to enroll in CadÚnico (Federal Government Single Registry for Social Benefits);
- Wait for selection by the Federal Government, which automatically enrolls families based on the information provided;
- After approval, the family unit will receive the benefit card and begin receiving the funds monthly.

To access Bolsa Família, it is crucial to meet certain criteria. First, the monthly income per person cannot exceed R$ 218. Then, simply follow the procedures mentioned above.
After obtaining the benefit, participants must be aware of the guidelines to avoid losing the assistance. Here are some:
- Registration with CadÚnico must be updated whenever changes occur in family data, such as income and the number of household members, for example. In addition, it is essential to renew the registration every two years;
- The vaccination records of children, adolescents, and pregnant women must be up to date;
- Children aged 4 to 5 must have a school attendance rate of at least 60%;
- Children aged 6 and over must attend school at least 75% of the time;
- Pregnant women must undergo prenatal care;
- Women and children up to 7 years old need regular nutritional monitoring.
