Last week, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) confirmed that, in July, energy bills will not incur additional charges, remaining under the green tariff flag. This situation has lasted for more than a year, so there is no need to fear higher expenses at the end of the month.

Aneel defines the tariff flags based on the reservoir levels of hydroelectric plants, thus influencing the cost of energy production. If the situation deteriorates, an additional flag, which may range from yellow to red (tier 2), is applied, resulting in an increase in the cost for the end user.
It is crucial to remember that Brazil faced a water crisis in 2021. In view of this serious situation, Aneel had to activate the most expensive tariff flag. During this period, Brazilians paid R$ 14.20 for every 100 kWh consumed in their homes.

- Green tariff: no additional charge;
- Yellow tariff: an additional R$ 2.989 for every 100 kWh consumed;
- Red tariff (tier 1): an additional R$ 9.795 for every 100 kWh consumed;
- Red tariff (tier 2): an additional R$ 14.20 for every 100 kWh consumed.
How to save on your electricity bill during winter?

- Reduce shower time;
- If feasible, choose to shower during the warmest parts of the day, avoiding “winter” mode, which can save up to 30%;
- Limit the use of heaters and, when used, do not leave them on for too long;
- Make the most of daylight;
- Replace incandescent bulbs with fluorescent or LED bulbs;
- Make full use of the capacity of washing machines and dryers;
- Reduce the cooling power of refrigerators.
