The budget proposed by the government under the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) indicates that the minimum wage in 2024 will be R$ 1,421, starting in January of the following year. This amount reflects an increase of 7.65%, compared with the R$ 1,320 established in 2023.

The justification for this adjustment is related to inflation of 4.48% added to a 2.9% correction, which refers to the variation in GDP over the last two years. This increase directly affects Brazilians who have the minimum wage as their main source of income.
Among this group that earns the base amount, we find six out of ten retirees receiving benefits from the INSS, as well as those who receive retirement benefits, pensions, or various forms of assistance. What changes with the approval of the minimum wage in 2024?
Benefits linked to social security, which correspond to one minimum wage, will be adjusted to R$ 1,421 as of January 2024. This change will directly impact several retirees and pension beneficiaries. Therefore, with the increase in the minimum wage, the ceiling for proceedings in the JEFs is also updated. In 2024, the maximum amount for a proceeding in the JEFs will reach up to R$ 85,260.
In this context, those workers who worked formally or as public servants earning up to two minimum wages may receive the updated PIS/Pasep allowance.
What about unemployment insurance?

Furthermore, the revision of the minimum wage will also change the base amount of unemployment insurance in 2024, exceeding the current level of R$ 1320. In addition, social security contributions made monthly will be adjusted for those who contribute based on the national minimum wage.
