Millions of Brazilians receive Bolsa Família every month. This prominent income transfer program paid approximately 20.9 million beneficiaries in July, and the count is expected to remain similar in August.

Every month, the federal government conducts a rigorous review, a “fine-tooth comb,” of Bolsa Família records. Essentially, the focus of this action is to remove from the payroll users who no longer meet the standards defined by the social program.

As a result, countless families panic when they receive notifications that their benefit has been blocked. Many are unsure how to reverse this situation and reactivate the aid. If this is your case, do not be alarmed. In this article, you will learn how to recover Bolsa Família and resume your monthly payments.

Those whose benefit has been blocked should visit a Cadastro Único (CadÚnico) center or a Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) to update their registration data. Frequently, the block occurs because the data registered in CadÚnico is outdated.

In addition, beneficiaries whose Bolsa Família is blocked will see a message on their bank statement. The situation can also be checked through the Caixa Tem app, which also allows them to move the benefit funds.

How extensive is the benefit block?

Anyone whose Bolsa Família is blocked must act quickly to reverse this condition. On average, the unblocking period is 90 days, or three months. Families will start receiving the installments again after updating their data and if they continue to meet the benefit's criteria.

According to the Ministry of Social Development and the Fight Against Hunger, those who manage to reverse the block and resume regular payments will be entitled to a retroactive amount for the months in which payments were blocked. This serves as an additional incentive to try to reverse the situation.

Bolsa Família can be canceled

It is important to note that it is possible to reverse the Bolsa Família block. However, cancellation of the benefit is irrevocable. Below are the three main reasons for cancellation:

  1. Inconsistency in the registered data: Mainly related to family income. The government cancels the benefit if it discovers false information.
  2. Outdated registration information: If the data is not updated every two years, the benefit may be canceled.
  3. Bolsa Família Protection Rule: If family income exceeds a specific limit, the benefit is canceled after two years of partial payments.

Requirements to keep the benefit

Bolsa Família users must meet requirements to remain eligible:

  • Attend prenatal care appointments;
  • Following the vaccination schedule;
  • Monitor the nutritional status of children under 7;
  • Ensure minimum school attendance for children and adolescents;
  • Update the Cadastro Único every two years.
