Proposal suggests Fare-Free Transit for Bolsa Família participants. Find out how you can implement the plan.
Considerable benefits may be granted to Bolsa Família participants in the coming months. According to behind-the-scenes data obtained by the Metrópoles portal, these recipients may gain access to the Fare-Free Transit system, meaning they would no longer need to pay fares on public transportation.

However, the initiative is not being discussed throughout Brazil. Talks on the topic are expected to begin in the city of São Paulo in a few days. The City Council will soon put the plan on the agenda, shortly after a year has passed since Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) promised to provide free transit to all residents, a promise that has yet to be fulfilled.

We are currently seeking to implement a renewed Fare-Free Transit model that will not cover all residents of the country's largest city but aims to benefit at least Bolsa Família participants. City councilors will likely soon meet with members of São Paulo's municipal government to examine the proposal.
Bolsa Família in São Paulo
The latest data from the Ministry of Social Development, Family and the Fight Against Hunger reveal that just over 21 million individuals from all areas of the country are eligible to receive Bolsa Família. In São Paulo alone, it is estimated that around 1.5 million people have this right.
This, therefore, would be the total number of São Paulo residents who could use the city's public transportation without incurring costs. Mayor Ricardo Nunes has already shown interest in running for reelection in the next election and could use this initiative as an electoral resource.
Inauguration of the Zero Fare
In the meantime, calm is necessary. As highlighted previously, discussions about the project are just beginning in the São Paulo City Council. Legislators aim to approve the text in the new municipal budget plan, which is already being debated in the legislative body.
If the document containing this suggestion is approved, Zero Fare for Bolsa Família participants could be introduced starting the following year. Thus, in 2024, these beneficiaries could begin using public transportation free of charge.
Bolsa Família in October
The exemption would not be introduced in 2023; however, Bolsa Família payments for this year continue to be made normally. According to the Ministry of Social Development, benefit transfers will resume next week. Starting on the 18th, the first group will already begin receiving payments in their accounts.

As in previous months, the federal government is expected to continue with the same Bolsa Família payment strategy in October, always starting with a base of R$ 600 per household. This amount, however, may be adjusted upward or downward, depending on each citizen's specific circumstances.
