The Brazilian government offers several social programs aimed at helping those on low incomes. Bolsa Família, a financial assistance program implemented in 2003 during the first presidential term of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), is one of these programs.
Bolsa Família was created through Provisional Measure 132, which became law the following year. The program’s main purpose is to eradicate the cycle of poverty, impacting several generations of Brazilian families. To achieve this goal, the program makes monthly transfers conditional on health, income, and education.
The payment of the revised Bolsa Família amount will be made in August.

Families benefiting from the program receive a minimum monthly amount of R$ 600 from the Brazilian government. The purpose is to ensure that each family member has a minimum of R$ 142 per month. Consequently, the program’s monthly amount may vary from month to month.
Some families received R$ 705.40 in the payment made in June. July is still underway.
However, the August amount is expected to be lower due to the reduction in the price of cooking gas. This indicates that the benefit offered by the income transfer program will be slightly lower, but will still serve the same number of families.
It is important to emphasize that, in addition to the minimum amount paid by Bolsa Família, beneficiaries also receive additional benefits. Thus, families with children up to six years old may receive an additional R$ 150 per month.
Children between 7 and 18 years old, as well as pregnant women, also receive an additional R$ 50. Thus, the monthly benefit amount increases.
To receive the additional amounts, it is essential to meet certain criteria. Children and adolescents must have a minimum school attendance rate of 75% and keep their vaccinations up to date. Prenatal care is required for pregnant women, as is nutritional monitoring for children up to 7 years old.

Gas Allowance in August
In 2023, the Federal Government is reinstating the Gas Allowance. Created in December 2021 during the previous administration, this program aims to help with the purchase of a 13 kg LPG gas cylinder, credited together with the Bolsa Família payment through Caixa Tem.
The third installment of the year was paid the previous month, with an average amount of R$ 110. The program makes payments every two months, so there was no payment in July.
The national Gas Voucher is based on the average price of a 13 kg gas cylinder over the last six months, between February and July 2023, according to data compiled by ANP. Based on this calculation, the benefit amount for the following month, August, will be determined.
The previous installments were R$ 112 in February, R$ 110 in April, and R$ 109 in June, following the averages calculated by ANP in the first half of the year. The expectation is that the next installments will remain between R$ 109 and R$ 112, based on the reference prices used.
This action aims to provide support for the purchase of cooking gas, benefiting Bolsa Família members. Thus, it facilitates access to an essential resource throughout the country.
