The updated Traffic Law, implemented since 2020, brings significant news for drivers! Find out what it is and understand the changes!
The modernized Traffic Law, in effect since 2020, introduced an update to the CNH: an extension of the renewal period. Previously, it was necessary to renew a driver's license every 5 years. Now, however, those under 50 have the period extended to 10 years.
This means that physical, mental, ophthalmological, and other fitness exams required for licensing only need to be repeated after this period. There is more news!
A bill currently under consideration proposes extending the driver's license renewal period, which is currently 30 days, to 60 days!
Discover other updates to the CNH under the new legislation
The CNH had its validity established as follows:
- Drivers under 65 renewed every 5 years;
- Drivers over 65 needed to retake the exams every 3 years.
With the update, renewal is now as follows:
- 5 years for drivers aged 50 to 70;
- 3 years for drivers over 70.
However, the period for driving with an expired license remains the same: 30 days without fines. After that, the offense is very serious, resulting in 7 points on the license and a fine of R$ 293.47.
Understand the bill that extends the renewal period
The Chamber of Deputies is working on Bill 2496/22, which extends the period for renewal after the license expires to 60 days. According to the bill's rapporteur, the reason is that 30 days is too short for drivers to organize themselves to complete all the necessary procedures.
During this 60-day period, the driver will not receive fines and will have enough time to undergo the mandatory exams. The offense will be the same after this period.
Understand the exams required to renew your driver's license
The New Law does not introduce any changes to the driver's license requirements for medical and psychological exams. To renew it, you must present your ID, proof of residence, and your old driver's license. You will then pay the renewal fee and proceed to the exams, which are:
Physical and mental fitness exams for categories A and B;
Toxicological exam for categories C, D, and E.
Finally, drivers in categories C, D, and E who fail to take the toxicology test will be fined up to 5 times the normal amount: R$ 1,467.35, in addition to having their right to drive suspended for 3 months.
