Changes to Bolsa Família: Government Announces Updates for Individuals in September

Recently, the Ministry of Social Development released new guidelines for registering Bolsa Família beneficiaries. These changes aim to combat potential fraud. Starting next month, people who live alone and are enrolled in the social program need to be alert to the changes.

This Federal Government initiative is intended to address suspicions of inappropriate behavior by setting a ceiling of 16% on the total number of registrations. The objective of Bolsa Família is to ensure that assistance reaches Brazilian families that genuinely meet the established criteria.

Since the beginning of the year, the government has initiated an in-depth review of the information in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico), paying special attention to households with only one member. As a result, by July, Bolsa Família payments had been suspended for more than 934,000 individuals who claimed to live alone.

These actions seek to ensure the transparency and efficiency of the program, ensuring that the funds benefit those who truly need them. Thus, the initiative aims to combat potential irregularities and provide a fair allocation of assistance.

Who is eligible for Bolsa Família?

The benefit is available to families with a monthly per capita income of up to R$ 218. This means that the family's total income, when divided by the number of members, must not exceed this amount.

For example, a single mother with four minor children earns R$ 900 per month working as a cleaner. Since her children do not work, the entire family lives on this salary.

Thus, when dividing this amount among the five family members, the per capita income is R$ 180. Since R$ 180 is less than R$ 218, both the mother and her children may benefit from Bolsa Família.

What criteria must be followed?

Families must meet certain health and education requirements, such as:

  • Attend prenatal appointments;
  • Follow the national vaccination schedule;
  • Have nutritional check-ups for children under 7 years old;
  • Ensure 60% school attendance for children aged 4 to 5 and 75% for those between 6 and 18 who have not yet completed elementary school;
  • Update the Cadastro Único at least every two years.

Bolsa Família suspended: what to do?

The head of the household can check the benefit status through the Bolsa Família app or bank statement. If they detect any problem or missing deposit, they should first check whether they failed to meet any of the program requirements or whether their registration is outdated.

Only after this verification is it recommended to contact the service center where they registered to discuss the issue. To ensure the continuity of the benefit, it is crucial that registration information is updated and reviewed every 24 months.
