The law that exempts churches, temples, and some charitable organizations from ICMS on electricity and gas bills has been approved. See the details!
On Wednesday morning (12), Governor Cláudio Castro approved Law 10,061, which provides a significant benefit for temples and churches. Effective until December 31, 2032, this recent law exempts these entities from paying ICMS on energy and gas bills.
The launch took place at an event that brought together faith leaders and lawmakers from the evangelical caucus.
ICMS: relief for religious organizations
The recent regulation, which requires regulation by the State Treasury Department, provides an essential benefit. Starting with September bills, paid in October, religious institutions will be exempt from ICMS on electricity and gas bills.

To qualify for this benefit, religious organizations and other beneficiaries must submit an application to the State Treasury Department, providing documents proving ownership of the property receiving the benefit and its institutional purpose.
Convenience for energy and gas companies
With the new law in effect, energy and gas companies also have a fundamental mission. On the bills of the beneficiary religious institutions, these companies must explicitly highlight that the service or operation is covered by the ICMS exemption.
This step seeks to ensure transparency and facilitate the identification of exempt bills, preventing any improper charges by the companies. This action by the state government aims to recognize and highlight the role of religious entities in society, bringing a considerable reduction in the operating costs of these places of worship.
The ICMS exemption on electricity and gas bills will allow these institutions to allocate more resources to social and religious activities, benefiting the community.
It is important to emphasize that the new law, in addition to providing financial relief for churches and religious temples, also has a favorable impact on the energy and gas sector.
