Last Wednesday (07), Carioca Woman Card number 500 was delivered by Eduardo Paes, the mayor, to a beneficiary of the Specialized Center for Assistance to Women in Situations of Violence (NEAM), located at the Elza Soares Carioca Women’s House, in Padre Miguel.

The temporary benefit in question, provided by the Department of Policies and Promotion for Women, aims to provide emergency financial assistance to women in situations of violence and social vulnerability. It has been available to residents of Rio de Janeiro since January 2022 and has already benefited more than 1,500 people, since several beneficiaries are mothers of one or more children.

The Carioca Woman Card law was enacted in January 2023. Thus, more than R$ 1.5 million has been invested so far to continue providing the service to women in Rio. By the end of 2024, the city government estimates that more than R$ 3 million will have been allocated to the benefit.

A credit of R$ 500 is offered by the city government to beneficiaries, and the amount can be used for purchases at any establishment. The benefit is granted for up to 6 months, a period that may be extended by an additional 90 days (3 months).

To access the program, the woman must reside in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro and be assisted by one of the organizations in the network addressing violence against women operating in the municipality.

The purpose of the benefit is to ensure financial stability for women who are victims of violence so that they can distance themselves from their abusers and feel secure as they proceed with legal proceedings.
