The strike by teachers in the state education system in Rio de Janeiro has come to an end, but the workers are suffering significant deductions from their salaries. These deductions result from the days they were absent during the work stoppage, which was deemed illegal by the president of the Court of Justice, Judge Ricardo Cardozo.

With one of the lowest salaries in the country, teachers face precarious conditions and inadequate compensation for the role they perform.
Understand the context of the strike
The teachers went on strike due to the disparity between the national minimum salary established for the category and the base salary they receive. While the national minimum salary is R$ 4,420, the base salary for teachers in Rio de Janeiro is only R$ 1,588 for a workload of 18 hours per week.
After 44 days of work stoppage, the workers decided to suspend the strike and resume classes. However, they remain on strike status, maintaining the mobilization to ensure their demands are met.
An agreement was reached between the State Union of Education Professionals (Sepe) and the State Department of Education (Seeduc), under which the absences will be excused once the union submits a class make-up plan.
Sepe has already sent the plan to Seeduc, which includes making up the days of the work stoppage and the school days affected by the strike. In addition, they requested the return of the amounts deducted through a supplementary payroll in July 2023.
