Thus, this FGTS profit amount is simply the profit obtained by Caixa from this inactive money in the accounts. Throughout the year, the institution uses the profitability of these amounts, reinvesting it in other social projects.
The interest on this inactive amount in the account generates a return, which is the profit. Therefore, an amount from CEF will be received back by all workers who keep their money inactive in the FGTS account.
Who can receive the FGTS profit?
Any worker who has a balance in the account until the end of the base year (the previous year, in this case, 2022) may receive an amount proportional to it. This is valid for both active and inactive accounts through December 31 of the previous year.
In case you are wondering, yes, you will receive an amount related to the FGTS profit even if you have made a withdrawal. What matters, in the end, is that the balance is positive.
The estimated total for the previous year was approximately R$15.4 billion – a 16% increase compared to 2021, according to the Ministry of Labor and Employment. Thus, at least 90% of this profit should be returned to workers to ensure a return above inflation.
It is important to point out that the exact amount of the 2022 FGTS profit will only be disclosed in July. However, last year, 99% of the total was passed on to workers by the FGTS Governing Council. If the government decides on the same percentage this year, the return will be 7.64%, above the IPCA's 5.79% – a return above inflation.
The government's action depends on the STF
The monetary adjustment of the Guarantee Fund amounts is being reviewed by the Federal Supreme Court. Although these changes may not affect workers in the end, they may alter the percentage to be decided by the federal government for distributing the FGTS profit.
However, the judgment is suspended at the request of Justice Nunes Marques, who is expected to resume the case in the coming weeks. The correction of the FGTS may result in a deficit of R$ 661 billion in the federal government’s coffers.
