In addition to 600,000 families in 31 municipalities, there are people entitled to discounts of 65% on their electricity bills who are unaware of it. These discounts come from the Social Electricity Tariff (TSEE) program; however, few people know about this benefit, which helps ease electricity bills.

Light, the energy company, states that approximately 859,000 of its customers in Rio de Janeiro are registered in the program. Currently, the company is seeking out users of its services who are entitled to these discounts on their electricity bills.
Light emphasizes that families already benefiting from the Social Tariff must keep their information up to date at the Social Assistance Reference Centers (CRAS) in the municipalities where they live. Otherwise, they may lose the benefit due to a failure to update their information.
How to register for the program and get discounts on your electricity bill?
To enroll in the program and receive discounts on your electricity bill, you need to gather documents such as CPF, RG, NIS or BPC, as well as the installation number, which is on the Light bill. With these documents at hand, you need to contact the company to request the benefit.

How are the discounts applied to the electricity bill?
The Tarifa Social program discounts are applied to the electricity bill and can range from 10% to 65%, depending on monthly consumption. It is important to emphasize that each family is entitled to the discount for only one consumer unit. The benefit is applied quite simply and follows the criteria below:
- If monthly consumption is equal to or less than 30 KWH, the discount is 65%;
- If monthly consumption is greater than 30 KWH and equal to or less than 100 KWH, the discount is 40%;
- If monthly consumption is greater than 100 KWH and equal to or less than 220 KWH, the discount is 10%;
- If the monthly consumption is above 220 KWH, there is no discount.
How is Light’s energy tariff determined?
The final consumer tariff includes 41% in charges and taxes. Thus, the share that goes to the distributor represents 19% of the total.
For example, on a R$ 100 electricity bill, Light receives R$ 19 for providing and distributing energy to customers, as well as to cover the company’s costs, such as paying employees and suppliers. The remaining R$ 81 goes toward paying the energy sector’s expenses.
