Barbecue lovers, celebrate: since the beginning of the year, the price of picanha, a much-loved cut, has fallen 7.5%.
A survey by the Mercado Mineiro website indicates that picanha, which cost an average of R$ 71.89 at the beginning of 2023, now has an approximate price of R$ 66.52 in Belo Horizonte and the surrounding area.
The price drop brings relief to consumers, previously afflicted by constant increases in meat prices. See more!
Lower picanha prices in Belo Horizonte
The Mercado Mineiro study shows that almost all meat cuts fell in price between May and June this year, including picanha.
Another highlight is contra filé, with a 5.5% reduction in a little over a month, from R$ 48.05 to R$ 45.39. These variations indicate a trend favorable to consumers, who now have the chance to buy their favorite cuts at lower prices.
Changes in meat prices and consumption
Despite the reduction in beef prices, beef consumption in Brazil reached its lowest level since 2004. The decline in Brazilians' income and high prices are cited as the main reasons.
Data from Itaú BBA’s Agro Consultancy show that annual per capita beef consumption stood at 24.2 kg, while pork consumption reached a record 18.94 kg per person last year.
In addition, research by Mercado Mineiro indicates that some pork cuts also saw price declines, but more subtly.
Bacon, for example, became 4.5% cheaper, falling from R$ 12.73 to R$ 12.19. Chicken followed the downward trend, with the price of chilled chicken breast falling 5.2%, from R$ 13.28 to R$ 12.59.
The drop in meat prices is great news for consumers. However, it is important to note that there is still significant price variation between butcher shops.
According to the research, meat prices can vary by as much as 201% between different stores. Picanha, for example, varies by 80%, with prices ranging from R$ 49.99 to R$ 89.98.
