The Bolsa Família represents the main income transfer initiative in Brazil. Each month, countless citizens receive an amount from the program, aiming to support families in situations of economic hardship.
Even with the federal government adding a large number of new beneficiaries each month, the waiting list never becomes completely empty. In March of this year, this number reached zero due to the relaunch of the Bolsa Família. However, in subsequent months, this number grew again, reaching 441 thousand families by May.

Although the government is working to reduce this queue, the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Hunger Combat (MDS) disclosed that, at present, 494,362 families that meet the program's criteria are awaiting inclusion in the payment list.
This shows a 12% increase compared to May. Additionally, the MDS clarified that June and July are not comparable due to adjustments that led to changes in the system.
In a statement, the agency detailed that the Benefit System of Bolsa Família “faced problems in various functions between June and July, including benefit administration, such as activation and granting”.
The government regularly updates beneficiaries’ information
Monthly, the federal government examines the information of all enrollees to ensure that the benefit reaches only families that truly meet the established criteria.
As stated by the MDS, “the measures to refine administration (…) focus on optimizing the use of public funds, preventing families with inconsistent registration data from entering”.
“The dynamics of poverty and the number of families vary according to payment management and data updates, among other factors. This can lead to an increase or reduction in the number of beneficiaries,” the ministry explained through its press office.
Data review influences the number of beneficiaries
Recently, the Lula government has been dedicated to keeping beneficiaries’ information up to date. This action has contributed to an increase in program blocks.
On the other hand, the ministry pointed out that “the same applies to eligible families, which may vary according to municipal actions, such as Active Search, in certain months”.
“We emphasize that 2023 represents a unique period of renewal and adjustment in various strategies related to the implementation of public policies, especially those aimed at the most vulnerable, as is the case with the Bolsa Família Program,” the ministry stressed.
Eligibility criteria include:
- Families with a monthly income of up to half the minimum wage per person (R$ 660);
- Families with a total monthly income of up to 3 minimum wages (R$ 3.960);
- Families with a monthly income above half the minimum wage per person who are enrolled in or seeking inclusion in a program that uses the Single Registry;
- Homeless individuals, alone or accompanied.
Those whose registration in CadÚnico is approved and whose monthly income per family member does not exceed R$ 218 will be eligible to receive the benefit in the country.

August Bolsa Família schedule

Beneficiaries can already check the August payment schedule for Bolsa Família. Caixa Econômica processes payments during the last ten business days of the month, following the last digit of the Social Identification Number (NIS). Thus, each day, a new group of beneficiaries may access the benefit.
