Bolsa Família provides assistance to millions of low-income families in Brazil every month, granting a minimum amount of R$ 600, making it the main social program currently in effect in the country. Thus, many were alarmed by the recent news that the Lula government was allegedly planning to end the benefit.
However, this information is incorrect, and Bolsa Família will remain in place, as reported by the Uol portal. Posts on social media suggested that the Lula government had announced the termination of the social program, based on a video of Geraldo Alckmin, the vice president.

The video in question originated from a statement Alckmin made in November 2022. At the time, he was discussing the Transition Constitutional Amendment Proposal, a plan to modify the structure of the 2023 Budget. Thus, the proposal called for removing Bolsa Família from the spending cap, which has no connection whatsoever with the alleged termination of the program. Social media post
According to the Uol portal, the social media post displayed a video containing part of the vice president’s statement from last year, accompanied by the caption: “The poorest people always pay the price #foralula #forapt #bolsonaro #patriotas #viral #nordeste”.
“There is a consensus regarding Bolsa Família and children, and the other measures are donations; this does not affect the fiscal situation. In the budget, which is restricted, it is extra revenue, which may not even materialize, but, if it does, a portion can be allocated to investment. We proposed a solution that is not temporary; it has a basis, namely the removal of Bolsa Família,” Alckmin stated in the video.
Following this excerpt, the video cuts to a person who says: “Hey, cumade, what the man just said: ‘Goodbye, Bolsa Família,’ you see?”. At the end of the video, the news presenter informs viewers that the statement concerned the fiscal effects of the Transition PEC, but the excerpt is abruptly interrupted. The article’s headline also clarified that the news report discussed the delivery of the PEC to Congress.
Despite that, the creator of the recent post clearly intended to convey a different concept. In the post, the creator stated: “Misgovernment announces the end of Bolsa Família. It needs to save money for the couple’s trips and finance nations in crisis”.
The end of Bolsa Família is false
As mentioned, the misleading news circulating on social media is based on an excerpt from a statement by Geraldo Alckmin, the current vice president, made on November 16, 2022.
However, Alckmin was addressing the Transition Amendment, a plan aimed at resolving the dilemmas of the 2023 Budget. The amendment’s proposals were, in fact, intended to honor commitments made during Lula’s election campaign.
In the part of the video selected by the false news report, Alckmin says: “Removal of Bolsa Família,” presented as a statement announcing the end of the social program. However, the vice president was referring to removing the program from the spending cap, not to its definitive removal.

The removal of the Benefit from the spending cap has indeed been consolidated, in accordance with the decision by Supreme Court Justice Gilmar Mendes. It should be emphasized that there has been no official statement regarding a possible end to the social program.
