This Monday (30), the federal government begins another Bolsa Família payment cycle. According to the Ministry of Social Development, Family and the Fight Against Hunger, approximately 21 million citizens across Brazil may receive social assistance.

The current edition of Bolsa Família began in April; however, many still question the updated guidelines of the federal program. The income restriction, in particular, has caused uncertainty among citizens.

Income Cap for Bolsa Família
Is there, after all, an income restriction for Bolsa Família? According to the Ministry of Social Development, Family and the Fight Against Hunger, the answer is yes. To join this program, it is essential to meet the following two criteria:
- Maintain an active and up-to-date account in CadÚnico;
- Have a per-person family income of no more than R$ 218.
Understanding your per capita income
The concept of per capita income seeks to assess the impact of household income on the quality of life of all members of the same household. The Ministry believes this is the most effective way to determine these individuals' actual financial difficulties.
To calculate your per capita income, add up all of your family's monthly income and divide it by the total number of household members. The result indicates your per capita income.
It is essential to highlight that certain sources of income, such as:
- Compensation for material or moral damages;
- Temporary benefits granted by the government;
- Funds from income programs such as Bolsa Família itself and auxílio-gás,
should not be included in your per capita income.
If your family's income does not exceed R$ 218 per member, you are eligible for Bolsa Família in 2023. However, if your per capita income exceeds this amount, you will not be entitled to the benefit.
If your per capita income exceeds R$ 218 after joining the program, the situation changes. In this case, it is crucial to determine the extent of the increase. See the options:
- If it remains below R$ 218: you continue to receive Bolsa Família as usual;
- If it is between R$ 219 and R$ 660: it falls under the protection clause, receiving half of Bolsa Família for another two years;
- If it exceeds R$ 660: the program ends.
Review of the Bolsa Família threshold
In 2024, the Benefit will undergo significant revisions to its eligibility criteria. Last Friday (20), Minister Wellington Dias announced a change to the salary limit for the social program.
This limit defines the maximum income allowed for new beneficiaries. Currently, the threshold is R$ 218. This suggests that next year, the program's income threshold will increase.

Continuation of payments
As mentioned, the federal government continues the Benefit payment cycle this Monday (30). Today, beneficiaries whose Social Identification Number (NIS) ends in 9 will receive their payment. In October, some beneficiaries will also receive an extra benefit called the Nutritious Family Variable Benefit.

This additional R$ 50 is intended for families with women who have babies up to six months old. Thus, six payments will be made to these beneficiaries. For this purpose, the government provided an additional R$ 14 million, benefiting approximately 287,000 mothers.
