Recently, Simone Tebet (MDB), the Minister of Planning and Budget, stated that the federal government proposed an increase in the minimum wage for next year. Therefore, if the measure is approved, Brazilians will start to to receive a salary of R$ 1,421.

In other words, there will be an increase of R$101 in the minimum wage. Tebet confirmed the proposal in a press conference, where she was together with Fernando Haddad (PT), Minister of Finance, discussing the 2024 Budget.

Why will the minimum wage go up?

In August of this year, President Lula signed a law that provides for a new policy to increase the minimum wage. With this new law, the government will adjust the value each year, with the aim of granting real increases to workers.

It is important to highlight that the measure should make many people happy, since since 2019 there was no longer a law to determine the readjustment of the minimum wage above the country's inflation. The last real increase was also in the same year, when the value of the benefit increased from R$$ 954 to R$$ 998.

This year, on Workers' Day (May 1st), the current president defined the new adjustment for R$ 1,320, the current value. Thus, the value of the minimum wage was readjusted by 8.91%, exceeding the inflation of the previous year (5.93%)

This proposal was already well known, as Lula spoke about the subject a lot during his political campaign.

Expectations for 2024

If the increase actually happens, there will be an increase of R$7.7% in the value of the minimum wage. In addition, the value exceeds the estimate sent to the National Congress in April, as a value of R$1,389TP4T was expected for 2024.

Therefore, the new value takes into account the law and the inflation projected by the INPC (National Consumer Price Index), forecast until November of this year.
