What is the current Bolsa Família amount and how many people receive it?
As mentioned earlier, Bolsa Família is one of the most important social benefits provided by the Federal Government. Well known among the population, the program makes monthly payments to more than 21 million people.
In 2023, the minimum Bolsa Família amount is R$ 600 for beneficiaries, except for those covered by the Protection Rule. It is important to note that the program has several additional benefits, which helped bring the average payment to a record R$ 705.
But why this significant increase?
The Federal Government introduced several bonuses in Bolsa Família payments throughout the year. Below are some of the main examples:
- R$ 150 for families with children from 0 to 7 years old (Early Childhood);
- R$ 50 for families with pregnant women, children between 7 and 12 years old, and adolescents between 13 and 18 years old (Family Variable);
- Benefit for families with breastfeeding mothers and children under 7 months old (Nursing Mother Variable). This payment will begin in September;
- Extra transition benefit for citizens who received higher amounts under Auxílio Brasil. This benefit will be paid only until May 2025.

When we mention the additional R$ 110 to be deposited into Bolsa Família in August, we are referring to the gas allowance. The program grants this benefit together with the regular installments.
Established in 2021, the gas allowance aims to reduce the impact of cooking gas prices on the budgets of low-income families. In short, it allows the poorest families to purchase a 13-kilogram gas cylinder (LPG), an essential item for preparing food at home.
In recent years, the average price of a gas cylinder has risen considerably. Thus, the creation of the gas allowance became essential to help the neediest families.
Is R$ 110 the official amount of the gas allowance under Bolsa Família?
We can confirm that the answer is no. The amount of the gas allowance under the Bolsa Família program is not R$ 110, since the benefit is one of the few government social programs with varying installments.
At first, the gas allowance corresponded to half the average price of a 13-kilogram gas cylinder. However, this year, the Lula government increased the payments to fully cover the cost of the item.
For the next payment, scheduled for August, the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), based on the average price of an LPG gas cylinder across the country, has not yet announced the official amount. Generally, payments range from R$ 100 to R$ 112.

Regarding beneficiaries, more than 7 million families are entitled to gas assistance. However, it is important to highlight that the benefit is not limited only to Bolsa Família beneficiaries, who, in turn, are not automatically guaranteed a payment of R$ 110.
Brazilians must meet some important criteria, such as:

- Having an active and up-to-date registration in the Federal Government's Single Registry for Social Programs;
- Having a monthly per capita household income equal to or lower than half the minimum wage (R$ 660 for 2023).
In addition, gas assistance is also granted to families who have beneficiaries of the Continuous Cash Benefit under the Organic Social Assistance Law (BPC/LOAS) living in the same household.
This means that payments occur every two months. With no payment in July, payments will be made in August, determined by the amount established by ANP.
Regardless of the month, the Auxílio Gás schedule follows the same schedule as Bolsa Família. Thus, the organization of payments is based on the last digit of the beneficiaries’ Social Identification Number (NIS).
