The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, in collaboration with the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), attached to the Ministry of Education (MEC), published a professional development course for science teachers.
According to the announcement, 8,000 opportunities will be offered in the “Ciência é 10” course, launched in 2017. Of these, more than 3,000 will be available later this year, in August 2023. “Ciência é 10” Course
The teacher development course is aimed at educators who teach science in the final years (sixth to ninth grade) of elementary school. The program seeks to raise the standard of classes in public institutions and ensure MEC diplomas for teachers who complete it.
“Ciência é 10” will be offered through distance learning (EAD) by CAPES, in partnership with 18 federal and state higher education institutions spread across 13 states in the country. The course will also consist of 3 modules and a total workload of 480 hours.
Course purposes for teachers
The course aims to equip teachers professionally by developing knowledge and approaches on topics such as life, the environment, the cosmos, and technology.
Additionally, according to CAPES president Mercedes Bustamante, “Ciência é 10” aims to serve regions of Brazil that have not yet benefited from the program, such as the North and Northeast regions.
In addition, the specialization seeks to encourage scientific inquiry and interest in technology careers among students. It also aims to promote knowledge sharing through collaborative and innovative learning.
For this purpose, it aims to improve students' performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in the area of science.
“We recognize that investments in science and technology generate a prosperous cycle in countries' economies, but we often set aside the investments that should be prioritized at the foundation, that is, in the education of our children and young people,” reflected the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos.
