Registration for Bolsa Família: Find out which documents are required at CRAS.

Bolsa Família is Brazil's main resource transfer mechanism. Every month, the Federal Government pays this benefit to millions of families in conditions of social and economic vulnerability within the country.

In fact, Bolsa Família is not the only government assistance instrument. There are other assistance programs through which the Planalto meets the fundamental needs of Brazilians whose family support does not grant them full access to the rights guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.

Value of Single Registration

In essence, the government has various methods for identifying and categorizing low-income citizens in the country, with the Single Registry (CadÚnico), overseen by the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger (MDS), being one of the most notable.

CadÚnico facilitates access to several Brazilian welfare programs, such as Bolsa Família. However, being registered does not guarantee automatic inclusion in these programs, as each one has its own regulations for accepting new beneficiaries.

Therefore, being registered in CadÚnico does not grant immediate entry into Brazilian welfare programs. However, to be eligible for any benefit, registration in Cadastro Único is imperative.

Procedure for Registration in CadÚnico

According to Federal Government regulations, CadÚnico was developed to integrate economically disadvantaged families into social assistance programs. Therefore, only low-income citizens are allowed to register and receive social assistance.

See the prerequisites for registering with CadÚnico:

  • Families with a monthly income of up to half the minimum wage per member (R$ 660);
  • Families with a total monthly income of up to 3 minimum wages (R$ 3,960);
  • Families with a monthly income above half the minimum wage per member, who are linked to or seeking participation in programs or benefits that use the Single Registry;
  • Homeless individuals, alone or with their family.

To register in the government data system, you must go to a Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) or a Single Registry office. There, the individual will be interviewed about their family structure.

Documents Required by CRAS for Bolsa Família

Attendance at CRAS is for people to answer questions about income, expenses, and characteristics of their household and family members. The answers must be honest, to avoid suspension of benefits due to discrepancies in information.

At the CRAS or at the Cadastro Único office, the person responsible for the family must show their CPF or voter registration card to register. For other family members, it is necessary to present one of the following documents:

  • Birth certificate;
  • Marriage Certificate;
  • CPF;
  • ID card;
  • Work Card;
  • Voter Registration Card.

After the interview, if the citizen does not already have one, he/she will receive a Social Identification Number (NIS). With the NIS, families can benefit from social programs linked to CadÚnico.

Caixa Econômica carries out transfers in the last ten business days, following the last digit of the users' NIS. Thus, each day, a different group receives the amount in their accounts. Transfers began last Monday (18) and will continue until the end of this month.

Check out the Bolsa Família payment schedule for September 2023:

  • Final NIS 1: September 18 (RELEASED);
  • NIS final 2: September 19 (RELEASED);
  • NIS final 3: September 20 (RELEASED);
  • NIS final 4: September 21 (RELEASED);
  • Final NIS 5: September 22 (RELEASED);
  • NIS final 6: September 25;
  • NIS final 7: September 26;
  • NIS final 8: September 27;
  • NIS final 9: September 28;
  • Final NIS 0: September 29.

In short, the NIS allows the Federal Government to recognize citizens who benefit from social programs in Brazil. Therefore, keeping documents up to date and paying attention to changes in data, when necessary, are crucial actions to avoid the cancellation of Bolsa Família.

Caixa Econômica will make five more deposits for holders of NIS ending in 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0 next week. Families in these segments should be careful not to miss the opportunity to receive the aid amount as soon as it is available.

Finally, beneficiaries can access the funds through the Caixa Tem app. However, those who wish to withdraw the money in cash can go to a bank to complete the transaction.
