With the recent validation of the Tax Reform, the Brazilian population looks forward to a reduction in the cost of the basic food basket. Currently, even after the minimum wage adjustment, from R$ 1,302 to R$ 1,320, workers continue to allocate 55.63% of their net income to purchasing essential products.

This figure comes from a survey by the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese), regarding the cost of the basic food basket in June. The same institution also released the prices of essential items for survival in 17 state capitals.

- Aracaju: R$ 553.76;
- Belém: R$ 669.80;
- Belo Horizonte: R$ 666.82;
- Brasília: R$ 703.43;
- Campo Grande: R$ 724.09;
- Curitiba: R$ 703.83;
- Florianópolis: R$ 765.13;
- Fortaleza: R$ 672.66;
- Goiânia: R$ 704.89;
- João Pessoa: R$ 580.95;
- Natal: R$ 602.16;
- Porto Alegre: R$ 781.56;
- Recife: R$ 587.13;
- Rio de Janeiro: R$ 749.76;
- Salvador: R$ 594.32;
- São Paulo: R$ 791.82;

Furthermore, among the 17 capitals monitored by Dieese, 11 experienced a drop in basic food basket prices, ranging from 0.02% to 1.90%. They are: São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Campo Grande, Goiânia, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Natal, João Pessoa and Aracaju.
What impact will the Tax Reform have on the price of the basic food basket?
The Tax Reform received approval early last Friday morning. As a result, the document provides for the establishment of the “National Basic Food Basket”. Thus, the federal, state and municipal Value-Added Tax (VAT) rates for the products that make up the basket will be set to zero.

However, a supplementary law still needs to be created to determine which food products will be included in this group. According to Dieese, refined sugar, tomatoes and whole milk were the items that saw the largest price increases in June. Therefore, if these products are included, there may be a reduction in cost.
