Caixa Econômica Federal began making payments this week for the October installment of Bolsa Família. This renowned income transfer program directly benefits more than 21 million Brazilian families experiencing social and economic vulnerability.

In summary, the Federal Government offers various social benefits to support families that do not have a guaranteed minimum income, ensuring them the rights enshrined in the Federal Constitution of Brazil. However, many people still do not know how to participate in Bolsa Família.

In this article, you will learn the essential steps to access this benefit. The first stage involves registering with the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico). Only those who register in this database have the possibility of obtaining Bolsa Família. Therefore, learn how to complete this registration directly and find out which documents you need to present.

Registering with Cadastro Único may make you eligible for Bolsa Família

Basically, the government relies on several tools to identify and categorize low-income citizens. CadÚnico, overseen by the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS), is the main one.

It is important to mention that the Cadastro Único serves as a gateway to various social programs, including Bolsa Família. However, simply registering does not guarantee immediate inclusion in government programs, since each one has its own specific rules for accepting new beneficiaries.

Therefore, even if someone is registered with CadÚnico, inclusion in social programs is not automatic. However, access to the benefits is only possible if the individual is registered with the Cadastro Único.

How to register with CadÚnico?

According to Federal Government guidelines, CadÚnico was created to include families most in need in social programs. Therefore, only low-income Brazilians are eligible to apply for the benefits.

Check the criteria for registering with CadÚnico:

  • Families with a monthly income of up to half the minimum wage per member (R$ 660);
  • Families with a total monthly income of up to 3 minimum wages (R$ 3,960);
  • Families whose income exceeds half a minimum wage per member, but who are enrolled in or seeking to remain in programs or benefits that use CadÚnico;
  • Individuals experiencing homelessness, either alone or accompanied by family members.

To register, applicants must go to a Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) or Cadastro Único registration office. There, they will be interviewed about their family structure.

Find out which documents to bring to CRAS

The visit to CRAS is essential for providing information about income, expenses, and details about family members. It is crucial to answer honestly to avoid possible benefit blocks due to inconsistencies.

At CRAS or the Cadastro Único registration office, the head of the family must show their CPF or voter registration card. For the other family members, one of the following documents is sufficient:

  • Birth Certificate;
  • Marriage Certificate;
  • CPF;
  • Identity Card;
  • Work Card;
  • Voter Registration Card.

After the interview, if they do not already have one, the applicant will receive a Social Identification Number (NIS). Families can apply for social programs through CadÚnico only with an NIS.
