The MDS (Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger), which oversees Bolsa Família, issued a concerning statement. In the latest payment round in June, approximately 730,000 families received only half of the benefit amount. This occurred due to the new policy implemented that cuts payments in half.
Numerous people end up not receiving the full benefit amount, leaving them confused about what to do.

However, some CNIS data may be incorrect or outdated, causing some families to be improperly included in the Protection Rule. According to the Bolsa Família program, only families with a monthly per capita income of no more than R$ 218 are entitled to the benefit. Thus, if a family member gets a new job that increases the income beyond the limit, the group will lose the possibility of receiving the benefit.
Bolsa Família adopts new rule that favors groups of citizens
Now, under the new guidelines, if a family member obtains a new source of income that increases the monthly income, the group will remain in the financial assistance program for at least two years. However, the new income must not exceed half the minimum wage (R$ 660) per capita. But the rule will reduce the benefit amount by half.
Faced with this situation, many beneficiaries whose Bolsa Família was reduced by half last month, as well as those who fear that the new rule will affect them, are wondering what they should do. This is because the new rule is already officially in effect in the program, which means that in the coming months, many families will have their benefit reduced by half.

However, it is essential to first check whether the new Protection Rule was applied correctly. To do this, the family must add up all sources of income of the members of the family group, such as salaries, pensions, rent, retirement benefits, among others, every month. Next, it is necessary to divide the total amount by the number of family members, thus obtaining the monthly per capita income.
If the result is higher than R$ 218 per person, no action is necessary. The correct application of the rule guarantees the beneficiary the right to only half of the benefit. However, if the result is lower than R$ 218 and the family is still receiving only half of the benefit, this suggests an incorrect application of the rule, requiring a correction.
Correcting income errors under the Protection Rule
To correct the error, the person responsible for the family, usually the mother, must collect all proof of income from all members of the family group. After that, she needs to go to the Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS). There, she will be able to update the information and prove that the family should not be subject to the Protection Rule. However, it is important to note that the correction may take up to 45 days.
It is important to note that, in June, the Ministry of Social Development announced the completion of the integration between the Single Registry (CadÚnico) and the National Social Information Registry (CNIS). CadÚnico is a database that stores information on all beneficiaries of the Bolsa Família program. On the other hand, CNIS is another database that contains information about Brazilians’ income.
The purpose of this integration is to use CNIS data to automatically update beneficiaries’ income information in CadÚnico. As a result, they do not need to wait in line or go to the CRAS.

However, some CNIS data may be incorrect or outdated, which may improperly place some families under the Protection Rule.
