President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) sanctioned the Full-Time School Program. Law 14,640 of 2023 appeared in the Official Gazette of the Union on Tuesday (1st). In 2023, the plan aims to add 1 million enrollments in basic education schools across Brazil. The current National Education Plan, Law 13,005 of 2014, required that, by 2024, 50% of public schools offer full-time education.

This plan will especially impact those registered with the Single Registry and beneficiaries of Bolsa Família, considered a priority. The focus on these groups reflects the government's goal of providing equal education to all children and adolescents, regardless of their economic situation.

The Full-Time School Program can combat serious social problems, such as slave labor and malnutrition among children. More time in a safe environment, with adequate food and learning opportunities, will protect this vulnerable group.

In addition to education, this program will help working fathers and mothers who need to leave their children somewhere safe. Find out now what the Federal Government wants with the project and how it plans to do so.

The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, clarified the program on Wednesday, July 19, speaking to Carta Capital.

“The Full-Time School involves more time, infrastructure, methods, food, and materials. We will financially support states and municipalities,” said the minister. “I am impressed; all states and nearly 90% of municipalities have already joined”.

Full-time enrollments will be those in which the student is at school for at least 7 hours a day or 35 hours a week, in two shifts.

The National Education Plan determines that, by 2024, 25% of Basic Education enrollments should be full-time.

Cadastro Único for the Full-Time School Program

The implementation of this program is an attempt to improve education and break cycles of poverty.

The Cadastro Único, or CadÚnico, contains information about families living in poverty and extreme poverty. The Federal Government, states, and municipalities use this information to promote improvement policies.

Some people who registered with CadÚnico years ago have outdated information. The registration must be updated every two years.

If nothing has changed, confirm the information online through the CadÚnico app.

If you need to change anything, go to a service center for a new interview.

How to update CadÚnico?

The government checks Cadastro Único information against other federal databases. If there are inconsistencies, it is necessary to prove compliance with the criteria. The municipality is responsible for registering families.

During the interview, data is collected for:

  • Inclusion in Cadastro Único; and
  • Updating families already registered.

The interview may take place at the family’s home, at CRAS, or at a Cadastro Único service center.
