The Bolsa Família represents a government assistance initiative that benefits countless families in Brazil. However, to join the program, it is essential to meet certain eligibility criteria. The most relevant concerns family income, which must fall within the established limits.

In light of this, various questions arise regarding the subject. One frequently asked question is whether those who earn minimum wage can receive the benefit.

After all, can someone who earns minimum wage enroll in Bolsa Família?

The answer to this question is: it varies. For clarity, it is crucial to understand Bolsa Família’s fundamental rule regarding the income limit.

Today, to be included in the program, the family must have a per capita income of up to R$ 218. This means that when adding up the family members’ monthly income and dividing it by their number, the amount obtained cannot exceed this figure.

For example, let us consider that a family has two members and one of them earns a minimum wage. In this situation, the per capita income is half a minimum wage (R$ 660 in 2023). Therefore, this amount exceeds the limit established by Bolsa Família, excluding this family from the program.

On the other hand, if a family of 7 members has an income of one minimum wage per month, it qualifies for Bolsa Família. This is because the per capita income will be R$ 188.57, which is below the program’s limit.

How to register to receive Bolsa Família?

After meeting the income criterion, the family can register for Bolsa Família. However, there is no specific registration for this purpose.

Instead, the family must register with the CadÚnico (the Government’s Single Registry for Social Benefits). This is the instrument that allows the government to identify Brazilians eligible for various social programs, including Bolsa Família.

For registration, the head of the family must go to the CRAS (Social Assistance and Reference Center) closest to their residence, bringing their documents and a document for each resident of the same household.

After registration, all you have to do is wait for the next government selection, which occurs automatically based on the data of families in CadÚnico and the vacancies available in the program.

Stay up to date with the program’s rules!

Bolsa Família participants need to stay informed about the program’s rules. This is because failure to comply with any rule may result in the suspension or termination of the benefit.

See below all the Bolsa Família requirements:

  • CadÚnico must be updated whenever there are changes to family data, whether in income or in the number of members. In addition, the registration must be renewed every two years, even without changes;
  • Children, adolescents, and pregnant women need to keep their vaccinations up to date;
  • Children between 4 and 5 years old must maintain at least 60% school attendance;
  • Children aged 6 and older must have at least 75% school attendance;
  • Pregnant women must receive prenatal care;
  • Women and children up to 7 years old must receive nutritional monitoring.
