The Federal Government continues to add numerous families to the Bolsa Família registry. In September, the country’s main financial assistance program admitted 550,000 new families to the list of beneficiaries.
With September’s increase, Bolsa Família has now admitted a total of 2.15 million families to its disbursements since March of this year, when the Lula government relaunched the program. In total, 21.47 million families receive the September payment across the country.

Average Bolsa Família payment amount in September
According to the Federal Government, the average assistance amount reached R$ 686.89 nationwide. This amount is slightly higher than the July (R$ 684.17) and August (R$ 686.04) averages, but still lower than the record reached in June (R$ 705.40).

In fact, June recorded the highest amount ever disbursed in the history of Bolsa Família, being the only month to distribute an average payment of more than R$ 700 to beneficiaries. Although the amounts in July, August, and September are lower, they remain significant for program participants.
Furthermore, it is important to point out that all these average amounts exceed the minimum installment of R$ 600 guaranteed by Bolsa Família. Therefore, beneficiaries will receive, on average, an amount above the defined minimum.
In September, the federal government's total investment in Bolsa Família payments amounted to R$ 14.58 billion. This amount is directed toward families in social and economic vulnerability.
Payment schedule in September
The September installment deposit began last Monday (18), following the Federal Government's schedule. Payments are organized according to the last digit of the beneficiaries' Social Identification Number (NIS).
Program participants receive the benefit through Caixa Econômica Federal, either at branches or via the Caixa Tem app.
The Bolsa Família payment schedule for September 2023 is as follows:
- NIS ending in 1: September 18 (RELEASED);
- NIS ending in 2: September 19 (RELEASED);
- NIS ending in 3: September 20 (RELEASED);
- NIS ending in 4: September 21 (RELEASED);
- NIS ending in 5: September 22;
- NIS ending in 6: September 25;
- NIS ending in 7: September 26;
- NIS ending in 8: September 27;
- NIS ending in 9: September 28;
- NIS ending in 0: September 29.
It is essential to emphasize that the payment schedule distributes disbursements over the last business days of each month. Deposits are made over ten days, beginning with number 1 and ending with number 0, according to the last digit of the NIS. This, in turn, enables the Federal Government to identify citizens benefiting from social programs in the country.
Bolsa Família Protection Rule
The average Bolsa Família payment decreased compared to June due to the Protection Rule, the federal government reports. In summary, this rule allows beneficiaries with a monthly per capita income above R$ 218, the income ceiling for receiving the benefit, to remain on the program's payment register.
However, the government begins disbursing only 50% of the installment amount that beneficiaries previously received. Payments continue for two years, allowing beneficiaries to adjust their finances and plan for the future without Bolsa Família. After this period, the benefit ends.
In September, two million beneficiaries fall under this rule, receiving 50% of the amount. In fact, in cases of loss of income or voluntary withdrawal from the program, the government ensures the family’s return to social assistance. Furthermore, the Protection Rule also maintains the payment of additional benefits for children, adolescents, and pregnant women.

Additional Bolsa Família benefits
Regarding additional benefits, Bolsa Família members may receive an amount far above the minimum of R$ 600. In fact, this has become more common in recent months, as the Federal Government began granting additional benefits to members.
The additional benefits of Bolsa Família include:
- Early Childhood Benefit: since March 2023, the government has been making payments of R$ 150 per child up to six years of age.
- Variable Family Benefit: guarantees an additional R$ 50 for children and young people aged seven to 18, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women in the family unit.
For example, a family made up of two adults and three children, aged 2, 4, and 6, will receive the minimum payment of R$ 600, plus R$ 150 for each child up to six years old (R$ 150 x 3 = R$ 450). Therefore, the total benefit will be R$ 1,050 for the month (R$ 600 + R$ 450 = R$ 1,050).
The amount may be even higher if there are more members entitled to additional benefits, such as pregnant women or children and adolescents between seven and 18 years old.
