Social Rent: A Benefit Granted by the Federal Government to Assist Families
Social Rent is an initiative aimed at helping families facing difficulties in covering housing costs, a fundamental human right. In this regard, when citizens themselves are unable to secure their basic human rights through work, state intervention through public policies such as this one is necessary. However, although it is a nationwide program, its administration is the responsibility of municipalities.
Variation in the Social Rent Amount: Determined by Municipal Policies
The Social Rent amount can reach R$ 800, but because responsibility lies with municipalities, this amount may vary. For example, in Goiás, the program provides R$ 350 for 18 months. In addition, the period for which the benefit is granted may also vary, depending on the policies adopted by municipalities.
Registration with CadÚnico: Gateway to Social Rent
Enrollment in the Single Registry (CadÚnico) is the first step to apply for the Social Rent benefit. Through this enrollment, the municipality can identify the social and economic situation of the citizen seeking the benefit. Families receiving up to ½ minimum wage (R$ 660) can register at the Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS). However, there are exceptions, as some benefits establish a higher income limit for inclusion. In short, registration in CadÚnico is essential not only for Social Rent, but also for other government assistance programs.
Social Rent in Cases of Housing Removal and Disaster
Social Rent is also granted in cases of housing removal and disaster situations that jeopardize people's safety and well-being. When people undergo removal processes, such as repossession or eviction from occupied areas, they face a series of challenges and difficulties and may be entitled to the Social Rent benefit.
Social Rent in Disaster Situations: Housing Support During Climate Events
Social Rent is also made available in situations of calamity, when weather events cause damage to homes, such as floods, collapses, landslides, among others. A recent example is the case faced by residents of São Gonçalo (RJ), who were severely affected by flooding. In this situation, the municipality set the Social Rent amount at R$ 600 for a period of one year.
