How to receive INSS benefits without having contributed?

Receive a benefit from INSS (National Institute of Social Security) is common for those who have contributed throughout their careers, ensuring financial security in retirement. However, many people may find themselves in a situation where they have never contributed to the INSS, whether due to unfavorable financial circumstances or other reasons. The good news is that, even without contributions, some people are entitled to receive the BPC (Continuous Benefit Payment).

Who is entitled to INSS benefits?

BPC is an assistance benefit paid by the INSS and is intended for two categories of beneficiaries:

  1. Seniors aged 65 and over: To be eligible for BPC, the elderly person must prove that they are at least 65 years old. It is not necessary to have contributed to the INSS, but it is essential to prove that they are low-income, that is, to have a per capita family income of less than 1/4 of the current minimum wage.
  2. People with disabilities of any age: People with disabilities can also receive BPC, regardless of age. As in the case of the elderly, it is necessary to prove low-income status.

BPC rules and values

The value of BPC corresponds to the current minimum wage. Currently, the minimum wage in Brazil is R$1,320.00. Therefore, this is the value of the benefit. It is important to mention that the BPC does not give rise to the right to a 13th salary and does not provide a survivor's pension.

Furthermore, to receive the benefit, it is necessary to meet some criteria:

  • Prove that you are at least 65 years old (in the case of the elderly) or that you are a person with a disability;
  • Have a family per capita income of less than 1/4 of the minimum wage;
  • Not receiving any other social security or welfare benefit, such as retirement, survivor's pension, sickness benefit, among others;
  • Have Brazilian nationality or reside in the country and intend to remain permanently.

How to apply for BPC?

To apply for BPC, the interested party must schedule a visit to an INSS agency or access the official website to make the application online. Therefore, it is necessary to present documents that prove age, disability status and low-income status, such as ID, CPF, proof of residence, among others.
